Synopsis:
The death of a police lieutenant who has been investigating New York racketeers and the acquittal of his murderer by crooked lawyers, leads to the citizens committee for crime prevention suggesting that Inspector Fernack (Jonathan Hale) engage Simon Templar (Louis Hayward) to help clean up the city. When a hit man tries to kill Inspector Fernack, The Saint is on hand to rescue him and leaves his unusual calling card, with its tiny sketch of a jaunty Saint, so that the mob know who is thwarting their plans. Incensed by the Saint's interference in his business, the mysterious leader of the gang, known only as the 'Big Fellow' dispatches his hired killers to track down the Saint.
As the killers chase Simon Templar over New York, the Saint still manages to find time to seduce the beautiful Fay Edwards (Kay Sutton) before meeting the 'Big Fellow' in a violent showdown.

Best Saint film. - The Saint in New York review by Steve

Spoiler Alert
18/12/2012

This isn't a great film , but is easily the best of the old black and white Saint films, with Hayward a charismatic and ambiguous hero. Much better than George Sanders. Paul Guilfoyle and a startlingly young Jack Carson are great as a pair of idiot hoods.

At one time, Hitchcock was down to make this his first American film.
