Brian Matthews narrates this documentary on the German warship the Scharnhorst, whose development began in secret in 1928. Early models were overdeveloped in terms of speed, though with the Anglo-German Treaty of 1935 production of the ship could begin in earnest. The first new large German warship since 1918, it went on to play a significant role in World War 2, and can be seen in archive footage here.
