Set in 19th century Japan, the story of 'The Sea Is Watching' explores the lives of the women working in a seaside geisha house. The house is run by an elderly couple whose geisha staff are a group of women who know their trade and take pride in their careers, with each having a reason for turning to the life of a geisha. Overall, it's a charming, thoroughly watchable film, beautifully shot and with an ending which will leave you wanting more.
As a big fan of the Great Man's work I put this on my list only to be disappointed.
Expecting the cinematic flourishes the detailed character drawing and tension of his earlier works I was faced with a flimsy story that had no sense that it was anything to do with Kurosawa. There is a featurette which goes someway to explaining why this is.
Stick with Ikiru, High and Low et al if you wish to eperience his best work
