Hundreds of Chinese refugees wash up on Japan's Wakasa Bay. One, a law-abiding farm-worker known as Steelhead (Jackie Chan), has come to find the woman he has loved since childhood (Xu Jinglei), but his quest ends in bitter rejection, when he discovers she has married Yakuza underboss, Eguchi (Masaya Kato). Heartbroken, his life descends into darkness, and petty crime quickly escalates to murder. With blood on his hands, he will risk everything to secure a future for his people, as they face an increasingly brutal onslaught from a criminal empire protected by a secret code. However, his defiance will lead to all-out war, as both factions fight for control of the infamous Shinjuku district in the heart of Japan's greatest city. a real crime story!!! - The Shinjuku Incident review by CP Customer
when first heard about it - banned in china is what one magazine said - dont know if this is true, but easy to see why. Jackie chan disrobe's his 'mr nice guy' image for something more gritty and in some respects shocking, to see the Jackie go against type casting... and its all the more better for it.
the film hasnt much of the action you may find in most of his films, but it does rack up a lot of tension. Film fans may see the movie may magpie from other movies (casino/carlitto's way/scarface) the film in some respect reminded me of Nick Bloomfields amazing doc 'ghosts' which also deals with the subject of Immegration.
All in all, a brave move from Jackie, maybe even braver than some of the stunts he has done in lesser years... to be cast in such a ''dark'' role.
Fans may not enjoy the fact that some of the action trade marks arnt in the script, but I for one was happy to see Jackie cast along side other great actors... than arnt just Chris Tucker!!
