"The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" is set in 1962, beginning at the height of the Cold War and is set shortly after the creation of the Berlin Wall. Alex Leamus (Aidan Gillen) is a hard-working but heavy-drinking British intelligence officer based in East Berlin. The majority of his fellow agents have been killed or arrested and with no operatives left, he is recalled to London by Control, the head of Circus (British overseas intelligence agency). Leamus is offered the opportunity to stay "in the cold" for one last mission. He has to become a fake defector of MI5 to an East German Secret Service, Abteilung. He is tasked with informing the British and to trap Hans-Dieter Mundt, the leader of Abteilung.
