History never forgets its heroes or its legends and during the 20th century there was one name that stood out and was shouted above others, Nelson Mandela. His struggle for fairness and equality spread across the world and left no one indifferent and unaffected by this issue and throughout his life he remained a devoted champion for peace and social justice .This is his fascinating and inspiring story. Starting from his childhood this programme takes you on a journey through his life, from his time at university studying law in Johannesburg to joining the African National Congress party and his subsequent struggle against apartheid. It covers his years in imprisonment in 1962 and also the following worldwide campaign to release him and his ultimate release in 1990. It also takes a look at his presidency from 1994 when Mandela became the first black president of South Africa which at one point would have been seen as being unimaginable.
