The Trent and Mersey Canal was opened in 1777, and stretched 93 miles. The journey along it today begins at the Western end, from the Weaver valley, and follows a route through Cheshire past the Staffordshire potteries and coal field. The canal then flows out into the flood plain of the Trent Valley.
