In this programme, we look at the development of the Bf 109 which flew in all theatres of conflict in which the Luftwaffe was involved. More Bf 109's were built than any other fighter of the era. After the war, the Spanish Air Force continued to operate them but powered by the engine of its great wartime adversary the Spitfire's Rolls Royce Merlin. The programme also features the ME 262, the world's first operational jet fighter. That fact alone should be enough to guarantee its place in the history books but there were other aspects of its design that make the ME 262 one of the greatest combat aircraft of all time. It had swept wings and a flying tail both of which were to become the norm in combat aircraft for decades to come. But the ME 262 came into the war just too late to make a significant contribution, its production bedevilled by shortages of raw materials and dislocated schedules due to the Alliens' bombing campaign. Other aircraft featured include the Bf 110 which was the world's first fighter designed specifically as a bomber escort and the ME 163 Komet, the extraordinary rocket-powered interceptor.
