When Brianne (Lea Thompson) first met Clay (James Marshall) she thought that her dreams had come true. He was a charming but tough young man who swept her off her feet. Seeing Clay was also a rebellion against her parents who didn't approve of her new lover. However, the couple got married and had a daughter, Lily (Karis Paige Bryant). Over the years though, Clay's behaviour became more and more violent. He was both physically and emotionally abusive to his family. Brianne spent most of her life waiting for a time bomb to explode. And then, Clay finally snapped. One night, when a man tried to chat-up Brianne in a bar, Clay shot him dead. Afraid of losing their freedom and each other, the couple decide to lie and claim that Brianne had shot the man by accident. Their plan fails and they both go to prison for life sentences. At first Brianne believes that her love for Clay can suffer imprisonment. But when her father dies and the authorities threaten that she will lose custody of Lily, Brianne is faced with a terrible truth. She is suffering because she loves Clay too much. Her decision is the heart-wrenching climax of this film.
