Although British Railways retired the last of its steam fleet in 1968 interest in steam engines has continued to grow. Hardly surprising really as the country that invented the steam engine has always had a love affair with this most human of all machines. Without the efforts of Britain's many heritage steam lines, the opportunity for families to savour the nostalgic atmosphere of a steam railway would have been lost many years ago. During the course of this programme we explore the following important lines:
- The Bluebell Railway, one of the pioneer lines with a strong Southern theme that runs through nine miles of attractive rural scenery.
- The West Somerset Railway, the UK's longest heritage line providing a useful smalls service to the seaside resort of Minehead.
- The North Yorkshire Moors line, featuring sleep climbs and beautiful scenery in the National Park, today well known for its role in Heartbeat.
- The East Lancashire Railway, a relative newcomer with authentic action in distinctive Pennine scenery from Bury to Rawenstall.
