Synopsis:
"The Waiter", Happy-go-lucky but down-on-his-luck Akpos (Ayo Makun) resumes at Crystal Hotel for a day-job as a waiter. He has been hired by a private firm as part of the catering team for the Minister of Poverty Alleviation and her well-heeled colleagues who are launching a scheme to aid the poor. Akpos has barely settled in when he is surprised by a call from his sister in Warri that their mom is being rushed to the hospital. There's no money to pay the bills so Akpos promises to send all he's being paid at the end of the day to settle her medical bills.
Meanwhile, Tonye Bright (Bucci Franklin), a calmly psychotic journalist at the minister's event, reveals himself to be a terrorist as he leads an army of gunmen to takeover the hotel. Tonye sets up a live stream on social media for Nigerians to watch as he proceeds to 'seize' the funds for the minister's project and distribute to downtrodden Nigerians. He becomes an instant hero to millions. Akpos relies on his 'Warri' wiles to outwit his way out of captivity and proceeds to seek a way out of the hotel. Idara Benson (Regina Daniels), his gorgeous employer whom he earlier had some friction with, promises to pay Akpos double his salary if he can aid her out of the hotel. Along the way, Akpos saves Femi Aina (Deyemi Okanlawon), the hotel security chief, and the trio team up to save the day. As Tonye continues his broadcast, putting the minister and her cronies to a mock trial and sharing the monies he's stolen from her, Akpos leads his team through floor after floor, using brains and brawn to fight, trick and maneuver his way around the gunmen who are everywhere. Until Tonye discovers Akpos and realizes that if he doesn't stop this 'waiter', his plan will go up in smoke. Akpos is on the cusp of success when he learns that his mother and sister have been captured by Tonye. Torn between saving his family and stopping the terrorists, Akpos is forced to make a tough choice that may imperil all whom he's ever loved. 'The Waiter' is a fast-paced action-comedy that is as much a commentary about the state of Nigeria, it's aggrieved youth and the promise of a better day through unquestioned patriotism.
