Over the course of a quarter century, The Who more than established themselves as true originals, ranking among that elite pantheon alongside The Beatles and The Rolling Stones as the greatest British rock group. Their music encompassed pop art to heavy metal, with all points in between, and Pete Townshend's singular songwriting embraced thematic concepts with Tommy (1969) and Quadrophenia (1973). The Who's remarkable stage shows set the benchmark for rock presentation in both sound and lighting and their barely concealed personal antipathy at various times manifested itself in deafening volume and pulverised instruments. For a band still able to confound expectation almost 20 years on from the original release of Who's Better, Who's Best, each of these performances help to explain why no other rock band does it better... you have the best.
