During the First World War, millions of women waited for the return of their husbands from the battlefields often in vain. The award-winning DEFA feature film (Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 1985) follows the fates of Richard and Karl, two German soldiers in Russian prisoner of war camps. Richard talks so much about his wife, Anna, that in Karl s imagination she becomes his own lover. Karl succeeds in fleeing, seeks and finds Anna, and claims to be Richard. Of course Anna knows that he is not her husband, but since she has long-since been informed by the authorities of her husband s death, she accepts the stranger. She even calls him Richard. The two of them become a couple, Anna gets pregnant... And then, a few months after the end of the war, Richard reappears. A fascinating chamber play based on Leonard Franks story Karl and Anna.
