The series depicts the social and family life of a boy in a typical African-American intercity family in Montgomery Alabama in the late 1960's. covering the ages of 12 through 17. The show's plot centers on Dean Williams (Elisha Williams), son of Bill (Dulé Hill) and Lillian (Saycon Sengbloh) Williams. Dean's Mother holds an accountant job for the Department of the Treasury, while his father is a music professor and part time musician.
