Initially designed to run from Gas Street Basin in Birmingham to the River Severn in Worcester, the Worcester and Birmingham Canal faced fierce opposition from existing canal interests. The famous Worcester Bar was thus imposed as a physical impediment to the rest of the canal system, though this has since been opened up.
