The Western Front - the infamous killing ground between the Swiss border and the English Channel - was as immoveable at the end of 1916 as it had been almost since the beginning of The Great War - through mounting losses neither side ever gained more than 5 -10 kilometres of territorial advantage. The pressure was on the American President Wilson to come to the aid of the Allies, but both he and the majority of Americans were reluctant, until the Germans embarked on an unrestricted submarine war, torpedoing American ships in the Atlantic - the USA declared war on 6th April 1917 'The Yanks Are Coming' reflects the harsh historical and human realities of the war on the Western Front and is a testament to the horrors the young American doughboys had to face alongside their more hardened and weary European comrades.
