Eleven year old Elizabeth has a beautiful, butterfly birthmark, just like her favourite country singer Dolly Parton. But when Elizabeth inadvertently discovers that she was adopted and that the family life she thought she had was nothing but a lie, she quickly realises what the truth must be.
It's the summer of 1976 and fortunately for Elizabeth, Dolly Parton is playing a concert just over the Canadian border in the USA. Despite not having a passport, Elizabeth sets off on her chopper for a reunion with her real "mum", while her adoptive mother, Marion is forced to break out of the carefully constructed "truth" she's been clinging to and go after her daughter.
