Synopsis:
Our rail journey through the Netherlands continues. We leave the Randstad at Utrecht and head east: Amersfoort to admire modern Dutch railway architecture and see Koplopers at work, and Baarn- the forgotten freight route. Onward to Arnhem, though not technically a border station in practice the major northern gateway to Germany - the route of the ICE's and fast and heavy freight to the Ruhr. We travel beyond the border to Emmerich and to Duisberg and discuss the prospects for a higher speed connection between the two countries. Heading north we track the route from Amsterdam through Apeldoorn, Deventer and Hengelo to the border stations at Enschede and Bad Bentheim. Still further north through Emmen and Coevorden to see the pet food plant. At Nieuweschans we travel the recently modernised route to Leer. We visit the regional capital Groningen before heading back west via Leeuwarden and then south to Zwolle and Lelystad and see the plan for a new route north. We conclude with a trip around Veenpark hauled by a Feldbahn diesel - a nice day out!
