Gunge, buckets of water, gwappling gwapenuts, spitting dogs, screaming kids and more gunge! Anyone who was a kid in the seventies will know this can only mean one thing: TISWAS!!! Still reigning supreme as THE Saturday morning kids programme, so much of it passed into the public lexicon: Compost Corner (with David Bewwamy), Trevor McDoughnut, The Dying Fly, Houdi Elbow and who could forget The Four Bucketeers with their Top 30 single "The Bucket of Water Song"?. Anarchy and mayhem thrilled the kids and appalled the parents in equal measure, turning the show into a national phenomenon. Chris Tarrant and Sally James barely held the chaos at bay, along with Lenny Henry (Katanga, my friends!), ex-Scaffold star John Gorman, Bob Carolgees and his uncouth puppet sidekick Spit the Dog, and legendary microphone mangler Norman Collier. And who could forget the random and relentless menace of the Phantom Flan Flinger it made no difference if you were a schoolkid in a cage or that week s pop guest, no-one was safe and nothing was sacred. Revolutionary, rebellious and downright rascally, TISWAS took no prisoners and passed into television legend.
