- "Être et Avoir" is a charming and intimate portrait of a single-class primary school in rural France and its inspirational teacher. Ranging in age from four to ten, the small handful of pupils are taught by the remarkable and wise Georges Lopez, whose patient and enlightened methods highlight a genuine affection for his young charges. Offering a touching and absorbing look at the heart of a village community, director Nicolas Philibert's film was a surprise cinema hit which was warmly received by critics and won numerous awards including a BAFTA and a European Film Award.

Wonderful film. Quiet, yet compelling. The little kid is a star - quite unlike the usual pretentious child portrayals in films.
P.S. If you like this, you will like The Chorus too.

Beautiful - Être et Avoir review by BE
This fly on the wall docu movie from 2002 presents a time of serene and technology free childhood of a small group of children attending a school in very rural France. How lucky they were. I wonder if it still exists.
