Powlett-Jones has found romance with Christine Forster whose political views he shares. The new Headmaster, Mr Alcock dislikes Powlett-Jones intensely and tries to get him dismissed from the school and issues an ultimatum. Following a harrowing interview with the School Governors Alcock suffers a heart attack. There is a staff reshuffle at Bamfylde following the passing of Alcock. Powlett-Jones finally has his book published and is still enamoured with Christine. Herries is Acting Headmaster while the Governors decide on who will be the permanent replacement. Powlett-Jones has the idea of opening a Prep. School at Bamfylde and using the school during the holidays for Summer courses for foreign students. He is finally awarded his much dreamed of position of Headmaster at the school. Christine reappears with a refugee to place at Bamfylde. Powlett-Jones receives a telegram with news of his mother's death and feels guilty for not making time for her. Christine's political career ends and she goes to Bamfylde for solace. Now happily married for the second time, there is still some heartache to come before life becomes a settled idyll at Bamfylde for the Powlett-Jones. Julia send her son Charles from America to Bamfylde and then reveals a secret.
