When Dr. Arnold takes over as the new headmaster or Rugby public school, he inherits a school where, at night, mob rule prevails and unkempt youngsters are left to co-exist behind locked doors, without adult supervision, guidance or rues. Arnold embarks on a programme of radical reforms despite the fierce opposition of bis staff and resistance from older pupils. Supported by his loyal wife Mary he gradually enforces trust, loyalty and respect among the boys.
