Arthur Rimbaud (Leonardo DiCaprio) is called to Paris in 1871 by fellow poet Paul Verlaine (David Thewlis), and their common love of literature develops into an intense, but ultimately destructive, relationship. Rimbaud drinks and rampages his way through society life, refusing to live by the conventions of the time, but his relationship with Verlaine becomes increasingly volatile, and is ravaged by bitter jealousy, obsession, promiscuity and violence.
