It is dubbed the toughest race in the world. For a quarter of a century, athletes have been converging on the hottest place on Earth, to take on an extreme race across the desert, the Marathon des Sables. 800 athletes from more than 30 nations compete in a 250km run over sand dunes, salt flats and mountains across the Sahara Desert. Up to 150 will drop out, however Olympian and adventurer James Cracknell will not even contemplate failure. But with such an unparalleled endurance race, no-one can predict the outcome. In the name of science, one of Britain's most competitive athletes will surrender his body to a team of specialists, thus becoming a living, breathing, competing experiment. They will attempt to condition Cracknell to scientific perfection, producing a body that can take on and overcome the toughest race in the world.
