Ranging in time from the early 30's to the late 80's, this video utilises archive film to create a vivid recollection of the golden days of the railways. Old Southern Railway trains are shown on their way to the seaside, followed by the approaches to Waterloo station in the snow of 1947. Carlisle Station full of smart electric locos, then back in time to 1966 for steam locos at the same station, those appearing include Clun Castle, Kolhapur, Blue Peter, and Oliver Cromwell. Then double-headed steam expresses in the Leeds area. We show the once extensive Longmoor Military system in 1968, featuring amongst others General Gorden and Errol Lonsdale. Then on to York, and the Derwen Valley Preservation Railway which despite its proximity to the museum, only lasted a couple of years. The now closed Swindon works, first in the 30's where a loco is steaming away on the stationary testing rig, followed by a visit in 1975 during the diesel-hydraulic era when classes 42 and 52 are seen, and finally a visit in 1987 during the last weeks of the works. The 150th Anniversary of the Festinog in 1986, showing most of the locos and a gravity slate train in action. Also in 1986 the 150th Anniversary of the London and Greenwich Railway. A big exhibition was held in Cannon Street Station where vintage electric trains gave rides, and Sir Lamiel an SR team loco is shown, and this leads to steams runs out of Marylebone, and then a report on 4472. The famous Flying Scotsman; from Kings Cross in 1968, its USA trip, and runs out of Denham.
