The Battle of the Bulge In the winter of 1944, the Allied Armies stood ready to invade Germany. To prevent this occurrence, Hitler organised the German army to launch a major surprise counteroffensive against the American forces. It caught them almost completely off-guard and caused tens of thousands of casualties before it was finally halted.
The Battle of Midway The islands of Midway were the focus of a brutal struggle between the Japanese Imperial Navy and the United States Pacific Fleet in the summer of and skill of the American pilots eventually cost Japan four irreplaceable aircraft carriers, 332 of their finest aircraft and more than 200 of their most experienced pilots. Ultimately it was this U.S. victory in Midway that ended Japan's seemingly unstoppable advance across the Pacific. Six months after it began, the Japanese Pacific war offensive was over.
