True Sounds Of Liberty - March 23, 1991 "I lift up the casket and fiddle with the dead…" I first heard Jack seething those words in 1981 on KROQ's Rodney on the Roq show. Back then, KROQ and Rodney were on the cutting edge of new music and TSOL was often in the rotation. I remember finding those lyrics and the punk/ gothic sound so compelling that I sometimes entranced by them. Punk rock was a new discovery for many people in the early 80's and I was clearly hooked. Needless to say, it was bands like TSOL, Bad Religion, The Circle Jerks, and other punk rock gods that helped cement my tastes in the genre. On July 4, 1982, I saw TSOL live for the first time at the Whisky on Sunset Blvd. In Hollywood. They were opening for the Dead Kennedys (yes the punk commando himself, Jello Biafra!) and, I'm telling you, I'll never forget it! Jack, Ron, Mike, and Todd all stood over 6 feet, were all in black, and each had white face paint on. TSOL was a real horror show! A few years would pass and the original TSOL would break up but would reunite in 1991, after almost ten years apart. I was certain that this time I would videotape TSOL as they may never play again as the original band. So on March 23, 1991, my camera was rolling at the UCI campus in Orange County. I knew I had captured the perfect TSOL show and a great mini-interview with late drummer, Todd Barnes. I have heard that, at this particular show, the band was rusty and not well rehearsed. For me, it just made the TSOL experience better - it was raw, real, and extreme punk rock. The antics at this show were incomparable: Jack in lingerie, nudity, and more. Jack's prowess as frontman in unprevailed and you've got to love how he says, "F-you!" to a crowd of people that dig him. I really like this show - maybe it's because I filmed it and it's taken me through a lot to get it to you, but I think it's because it encompasses punk rock at it's finest form. Bottom line: it's pure, unadulterated punk rock - it's True Sounds of Liberty! - Richard White
