If this does turn out to be Joaquin Phoenix's final performance then it is a fitting end. With films such Revolutionary Road, Vicky Cristine Barcelona receiving plaudits lately I'm surprised Two Lovers did not gather more attention, it deserves too. A superb opening introduces us to the life of Joaquin's character; a man seemingly on the brink and not for the first time. This is never fully explained nor does it require so as we soon witness the effects of two new women in his life and the chain of events that unfolds. I really am surprised by this strong drama, where even Gwyneth Paltrow proves she can still act (see Hard Eight for further proof) and the cast is generally excellent including Koteas.
It is a different kind of movie and I liked the main character's vulnerability. It's an unfortunate situation which I guess people sometimes find themselves in when they have to make a hard choice. I think his choice was right in the end and I liked the ending.
This is an offbeat movie and if you like that kind of film then it's one to watch.
