Richard Burton narrates this superb animation as we visit the inhabitants of Llareggub while they sleep. There is Mrs. Ogmore-Pritchard, relentlessly bossing her two dead husbands; Captain Cat reliving his seafaring times; the two Mrs. Dai Breads; Organ Morgan, obsessed with his music; Polly Garter pining for her dead lover. Later, the town wakes and we see them go about their daily business, aware of how their feelings affect whatever they do. To begin at the beginning: it is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobble streets silent and the hunched, courters'-and-rabits' wood limping invisible down to the sloe black, slow, black, crow black fishing boat-bobbing sea. And all the people of the lulled and dumbfounded town are sleeping now.
