Synopsis:
It's June 1941. In Finland, a machine gun company is deployed from its barracks to prepare for the invasion of the Soviet Union. Crossing the old border lost during the Winter War, the band of men engage in increasingly guerilla tactics as their advance on Soviet positions spills more and more into local cities, and the distinction between enemy and civilian starts to blur. Embedding themselves within hostile territories, the threat of ambush on all fronts tests the limits of their courage, discipline and moral code. As the company's ranks deplete, the tension between them augments.
While dealing with constant artillery barrage, sniper attacks and trench warfare around them, it is also the conflicts within each man that threatens to engulf them. Ultimately their dependence on one another is what becomes both their weakness, and their biggest strength. Finland's highest-grossing film of the year, 'Unknown Soldier' is a testament to their sacrifice in World War II and to the human suffering of a universal soldier. It is a part of history that is rarely spoken about, and a part of history that should never be forgotten.

An anti-war film? - Unknown Soldier review by RW

Spoiler Alert
04/11/2019

Whether Francois Truffaut actually said it is impossible to make an anti-war film because in the end you will only glamorise war I do not know but this film is one of the closest I've seen to achieve that. Based on a book published in the 1950s and the third film adaption it is about the battle between Finland and Russia that was part of WWII. After Russia had taken territory from Finland during the Winter War Finland, with backing from Nazi Germany, went on the offensive to recapture this lost ground. The film's portrayal of this is not a happy one. Clearly influenced by Saving Private Ryan there are many tropes you will be familiar with, but as the film goes on you start to get ground down by the pointlessness of it all, the message is clear, what are they really fighting for? Not particularly uplifting but definitely worth a watch.

Hi all.

This is a good film. About a realistic as it gets when it comes to war and action It is well known how well the Finns fought off the Russians in WW2. This film tells it as it was. It is dubbed but that didn't affect the storyline. Gteat Film. sayonara
