Series one of Upstairs, Downstairs takes place between 1903 and 1909 and concerns itself with the goings on of both the family and the staff at 165 Eaton Place, home of politician Richard Bellamy and his family - wife Marjorie, wastrel son James and wayward daughter Elizabeth. The domestic staff are headed by Hudson the Butler, a conservative and very proper Scot who has to contend with the 'below stairs' behaviour of the household staff, amongst them cook Mrs Bridges and maids Rose and Sarah.
