Synopsis:
Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. Through journeying from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, to Van Gogh's adopted home of Provence, France and eventually to Japan itself, this film provides a fascinating look at just how profound this influence proved to be. One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the huge impact it had on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh.
Seeing Japanese art in art shops and small Parisian galleries and then creating his own perception of Japan through in-depth research, print collecting and detailed discussions with other artists - Van Gogh's encounter with Japanese artworks gave his work a new and exciting direction. Featuring Van Gogh's personal letters, written accounts from friends and contemporaries as well as insights from artists and experts, 'Van Gogh and Japan' provides a fresh and revealing understanding of this extraordinary artist.

Fluency in Japanese needed - Van Gogh and Japan review by Maureen

Spoiler Alert

This was a fascinating story that needed better production. The first half was fine but after that there were many views of a Japanese gentleman telling us all about it, but without sub-titles, resulting in much frustration. In addition parts of the later section broke up both in the picture and the sound, similar to our experience with Oklahoma. It really isn't good enough.

an unknown side to van gogh - Van Gogh and Japan review by LM

This documentary is superb. You feel like you really begin to understand Van Gogh's art and what inspired him. The film is sensitive

to the isolation he felt and the urgency he felt in trying to produce art that represented reality. It is a beautiful well produced film and introduces an audience to so much that perhaps we in the UK do not know about his passion for Japan and Japanese art and the symmetry and paradox of Japanese society decades later returning this passion to embrace his art.

A stunning film. Just read the review below and we had no similar problems so perhaps this is a new disc.
