Over two and a half hours of Variety artists and singers from the lost worlds of the music hall, theatrical revues and ENSA. Evocative performances from legendary artists filmed as Pathé Pictorial supporting features or for their prestigious cinema newsreels when some of the much loved stars even hit the news headlines. Featuring the full range of classic Variety acts; balancing acts, jugglers, strongmen, comedians, musicians and singers. Musical and comic turns include The Beverley Sisters, Flanagan & Allen, Gracie Fields, Tommy Trinder, The Crazy Gang, Arthur Askey, Laurel & Hardy, Bob Hope, Richard Hearne (Mr Pastry), Max Miller, Anna Neagle, Richard Murdoch, Wilfred Pickles, Vera Lynn and many, many more. One of the undoubted mega-stars of the 1940s must be the incomparable American film star and comedian, Danny Kaye, who is seen here in rehearsal for his 1948 Royal Command Performance. He also visits Madame Tussauds to unveil a waxwork of himself before we see him entertaining at the actual Command Performance in front of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Closing the show is a very young Julie Andrews. By the end of the 1940s, Pathé had refined its way of filming Variety acts before the advent of mass television.
