Synopsis:
Goodbye Sir Simon! It is the end of an era. With this concert from the Waldbühne, the Berliner Philharmoniker say farewell to Simon Rattle in his capacity as the orchestra’s chief conductor Even if it is not without a tear in the eyes, it was a cheerful concert with vibrant works by Gershwin, Fauré, Khachaturian and Respighi. The star guest was Sir Simon’s wife, mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená, who sings excerpts from Joseph Canteloube’s charming Chants d’Auvergne. Magdalena Kožená’s “…mezzo voice more than accented the mood, offsetting the full orchestral colors with her unique interpretations and reach. She sang with impeccable finesse and together with the orchestra created an incredible tapestry of sound.” (Opera Wire) Special Features: Conductor Camera and interviews with Sir Simon Rattle and Magdalena Kožená George Gershwin Cuban Overture | Gabriel Fauré Pavane Joseph Canteloube Chants d’Auvergne (excerpts) | Aram Chatschaturjan Gayane Suite (excerpts) Ottorino Respighi Pini di Roma | Claudio Monteverdi Si dolce e il tormento Edvard Elgar Pomp and Circumstance.
