Using archive and motion picture footage along with dramatic reconstruction of significant events and incidents, this documentary reveals how the airmen of the British and French fought a long and desperate aerial campaign in support of the Armies on the Western Front during WWI. This is not the familiar story of the individual 'Aces' and their conspicuous exploits, but of the unsung heroes in rudimentary flying machines fighting in an unfamiliar dimension, placing their lives on the line to support troops grappling with the horrors of trench warfare. 'War Above the Trenches' shows the development of aerial warfare from its early beginnings as the Royal Flying Corps, and the part played by these first aerial warriors in the formation of the Royal Air Force. - Actors:
