When Italy joined WW2 in June 1940,Britain found their strategic positions in the Mediterranean and Middle East under threat as well as their lines of supply to oil and communications with India and the Far East via the Suez Canal. The Italians were defeated in February 1941 but the war of the desert had only just begun.
