"Warship" is the hugely popular naval drama series produced by the BBC in close collaboration with the Royal Navy, examining the working lives of Royal Marines at sea.The HMS Hero is captained by Commander Nialls (Donald Burton) and features David Savile and James Cosmo amongst the crew. The series focuses on the professional and personal lives of all crew members, from Captain right down to the lower decks, as they travel the world on tours of duty and tackle dangerous seafaring missions. Launching in 1973, Warship broke new ground by blurring the edge between drama and documentary. Real life members of the Royal Marine Commandos mix with the cast aboard fully operational naval vessels. Writer (and Royal Navy Officer) Ian Mackintosh teamed up with producer Anthony Coburn who wanted to create a series "that would do for the Navy what Z-Cars had done for the Police". Mackintosh received an MBE for his work on 'Warship' in 1976.
