In the 19th century South, Northerner Tom Grayson is turned away by the Rumford family’ and his intended bride – when rejecting the Southern code of fighting a duel. Tom takes a job as singer on a riverboat operated by Commodore Jackson. When Tom saves Jackson’s life after an argument over cards, the Commodore seeks to promote him as ‘ The Notorious Colonel Steele, the Singing Killer’.
