Three dissatisfied and dysfunctional couples in their thirties spend a weekend together in a summer cottage. The host couple is prone to bickering regularly. The married couples - Jan (Erik Kühnau) and Ilse (Bente Dessau), and Kjeld (Willy Rathnov) and Tove (Birgit Brüel) that are visiting understand and try to stay out of the way. A drunkard called Lars (Jens Østerholm) is brought along by one of the couples. At the cottage Lars provokes the others and urges them to try something new. They are looking for something new - trying to break out from the straitjacket of their personalities. And eventually a new day dawns, the weekend is over, and they must leave - early morning, the sea and the sky look gray. They need to return to their occupations - sadness, melancholy…A deep but simple film.
