When Vi, the publican's daughter and Chuck, the American fighter pilot marry, the union brings the village and the Americans closer together. However, happiness is short lived as the crew go into battle the following day, as the villagers wait in anticipation for the return of those they have come to love. As the friendship between Helen and the Major turns to love and her husband returns, passions and hearts are broken leaving Jim torn between his love for Helen and his desire to fight along side his men.
