Synopsis:
Benoît Jacquot directs this live performance of Massenet's opera set in 18th-century Germany, with Antonio Pappano conducting the Royal Opera House Orchestra. Werther, played by Vittorio Grigolo, is a young poet hopelessly in love with Charlotte (Joyce DiDonato). His love is doomed, however, as Charlotte promised her mother on her deathbed that she would marry another - Albert (David Bizic). Whilst it appears that Charlotte reciprocates, Werther's declarations of love are in vain as she refuses to break her promise.
