For a while it looked as though Wimbledon history was about to be rewritten when Murray took the first set in what was arguably the most gripping Men's Final ever for the home crowd. He played like a veteran for two sets against an opponent he deeply admires. Murray, the first British Men's finalist since Bunny Austin 74 years ago, heroically gave his all and kept a Centre Court crowd and more than 17 million television viewers on their seats. But, in a match that had so much riding on the result for both players, it was always going to end in tears. Federer's desire to take a record equalling 7th Wimbledon title and his 17th Grand Slam was greater and, as the Centre Court roof closed, Murray's hopes were shut out with the rain. "I'm getting closer" Murray said afterwards through his tears. And he is - closer to the championship and closer to his fans. But for now, Fred Perry will stay with Bobby Moore and the '66 Squad on a pedestal that Murray continues to look up at, while Federer joins Pele and Muhammad Ali. This video relives Murray's heroic display and Federer's awesome skill in its entirety, along with the emotional post match interviews.
