After several unsuccessful attempts to approach international film star Cesar Valentin (Peter O'Toole), young writer Brian Smith (Colin Firth) takes matters into his own hands, shooting the actor in front of hundreds of adoring fans, only to be killed himself in the ensuing chaos. Achieving instant notoriety for his murderous act, Smith transcends with Valentin to a luxury hotel in the afterlife, a strange new world beyond the veil of mortality inhabited exclusively by dead celebrities. Whilst Valentin attempts to determine his killer's motives, and Smith becomes enamored with pop singer Bianca (Marie Trintignant), the rest of the hotel's occupants are obsessed by one shared fear: how long will their mortal fame hold up after death and how can they escape a fall into oblivion?
