Combining the explosive elements of both novels on screen for the first time, this BBC adaptation explores the nature of love and sexual desire. Ursula (Rachael Stirling) is a teacher in a small provincial mining town. Her sister Gudrun (Rosamund Pike) is an artist, living a bohemian life in London. Rupert Birkin (Rory Kinnear), a school inspector, and Gerald Crich (Joseph Mawle), an industrialist, provide friendship and love, but as Gudrun and Gerald's stormy relationship begins to spiral out of control a journey abroad culminates in destruction and despair.
