- An ecstatic Mexico hosted a magical tournament, full of excitement and incident, and won through to an unexpected quarter-final place. England fell foul of a determined West German side, who inflicted a narrow defeat on the holders. The stars were undoubtedly the Brazilian juggernaut, who simply kept scoring throughout the tournament. With Pele and their devastating forward line, it was inevitable that they would regain the coveted World trophy.
