In the 60's, British businessman Greville Wynne (David Calder) pulls off one of the most brilliant coups of MI6 espionage. He wins the confidence of high-ranking Soviet Intelligence Officer Oleg Penkovsky (Christopher Rozycki) who passes key information to the West, including details of the propsed Berlin Wall and the Cuban missile base. A close friendship develops between the two men and a partnership that is as effective for the West as Kim Philby was for the Soviet Union. But theirs is a world where the usefullness of the individual lasts only as long as his cover. The pressure mounts and it is only a matter of time before the lapse in Soviet security is discovered by the KGB. When Wynne makes his final trip to Russia in an attempt to spring Penkovsky the net closes and the two friends are plunged into a nightmare of brutal interrogation, deprivation and torture...
