"Yangon Calling", a combined book and documentary, offers for the first time a comprehensive overview of the music and subculture scene in Myanmar. Until recently, the Southeast Asian country was one of the world's'most isolated countries, ruled by a military junta. Already during the dictatorship, an underground scene emerged mainly in Yangon, which grew rapidly after the country opened. "Yangon Calling" offers a rare glimpse into a vibrant music and youth culture scene, which nobody imagined existed in Myanmar. The authors, and photographers of "Yangon Calling" visited illegal punk concerts, met Burmese hip hop pioneers, the country's first girl group and followed graffiti crews in their forays. The book includes many follow-up reports, interviews, essays and photos. The award-winning documentary "Yangon Calling" on the punk and indie-rock scene.
