"Zift" is a tale of love, murder and betrayal. It's a tale of three people, Moth, Mantis and Slug, whose lives are inextricably linked by one thing — a black diamond. Moth (Zachary Baharov), is an ordinary guy from the city of Sofia; Ada (Tanya Ilieva), is his childhood sweetheart. They are trying to make a life together, but city-life without money can he really tough. In a bid to make some money Moth falls in with a local low—life, Slug (Vladimir Penev). Together they plot to steal a black diamond from Vlad the Bijou, the local jeweller where Ada works. The robbery is botched and it is Moth that takes the fall. Slug makes his getaway but the diamond is never found. While Moth serves his sentence of 20 years, Slug embraces the post-war regime and rises to a position ox considerable power. Within hours of Moth collecting his few possessions and leaving prison, Slug has him picked up and interrogates him as to the whereabouts of the diamond. Moth escapes and embarks on a quest to find Ada, unaware that she is now involved with Slug. After a crazy journey across a city he no longer understands, Moth finally meets his priest who tells him where Ada is. During their reunion Moth reveals to Ada he knows the whereabouts of the diamond. Together they set off to retrieve it, but along the way Moth asks to visit the grave of his son. It is here in the bleak, wet graveyard that Moth realises he has been betrayed. Determined not to give up the diamond, Moth attempts to exact his revenge on Slug, but it is Ada, finally revealed as Mantis, who strikes the final blow.
