Zubeidaa is the story of a young man Riyaz's (Rajit Kapur) quest to recover the memory of his mother Zubeidaa, a mother who he never knew and to piece together her life from the memories of those who knew her. Extremely beautiful & talented, Zubeidaa (Karisma Kapoor) is the only daughter of Suleman Seth (Amrish Puri), a film producer in Bombay. Unfortunately Zubeidaa's happiness more often than not fells victim to her father's unjustified domination over her life. This includes cutting short her burning ambition of becoming an actress and forcibly marrying her off to a boy she barely knows. Suleman Seth's ego and obstinancy continues to make Zubeidaa's life and marriage miserable. Behind every dark cloud is a silver lining, and Zubeidaa's life changes when Maharaja Vijayendra Singh (Manoj Bajpai) enters it, bringing with him hope, romance and ultimately love. Vijayendra Singh is already married to Mandira Devi (Rekha), a match between royal families that was prompted by motivations other than love. Vijayendra and Zubeidaa fall head over heels in love but the path of true love is not devoid of the thorns of social opposition.
