The Arthaus "In Rehearsal" series continues with this release documenting Zubin Mehta's rehearsals with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra for a performance of Richard Strauss's Till Eulenspiegels Lustige Streiche. The son of the founder of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra, Mehta was originally intended for a medical career. However, at the age of eighteen he abandoned the dissecting table and headed for Vienna, where he studied with, among others, Claudio Abbado under the great Hans Swarowsky. Mehta is most closely associated with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, who appointed him Music Director for Life in 1981. It is due in no small measure to him that the orchestra is now recognised as one of the finest in the world.
